What I read in Hatchet was that Brian was flying the plane and it didn't have any fuel left so it crashed. Brian remembered that Terry and him were on a bike trip and took another way home and they found his mom sitting at the station with another man wearing something like a tennis shirt and that was his secret. I also read that he was really tired and fell asleep in the afternoon.
