I started reading Blue and learned that Ann  Fay's father went to war to fight Hitler.  He left her in charge as the "man of the house."  During this time there was a polio epidemic and people were told not to meet in groups.  Ann Fay felt like her summer was ruined and she was working so hard to help her mother and plant the victory garden.
