Chapters 3 and 4 in Hatchet describe the plane crash Brian was involved in.  Brian fell asleep and then wakes up and realizes that flies and mosquitoes are all over him.  He takes his shirt and covers his face.  Once the sun comes up the flies go away. He thinks of vampires when they leave.
